Septic & Drain Field Repair Cost in Suffolk, VA
Septic and drain field repair cost in Suffolk, VA runs from a few hundred dollars for a pump-out to five figures for a new field or an alternative system. This page gathers national ranges from named guides, each with its date and a link, and sets them beside the two local figures that are official: the Western Tidewater Health District's permit fees and the City of Suffolk's own pump-out estimate. Use them to read a quote, not to replace one.

The type isn't a menu choice. A private soil evaluator's design, approved through a health department permit, decides what a lot can use. Alternative septic systems explains why wetter coastal-plain soils can push a design toward a mound or treatment unit.

The line items inside a bill
- Soil evaluation and design. HomeServe's November 2025 guide lists a soil evaluation survey at $100 to $400, and its June 2025 guide puts a perc test at $600 to $2,000. HomeAdvisor lists soil engineers at $700 to $2,000, and Bob Vila gives about $1,000 as an average perc test. In Virginia, a repair permit application normally has to include a private evaluator's or engineer's work, so expect this line on any permitted repair.
- Permit. National guides list $250 to $650 (HomeServe, June 2025), $250 to $1,000 (HomeServe, November 2025) or $450 to $2,300 (HomeAdvisor). In Suffolk, the health department's repair permit fee is $225 or $425.
- Labor. HomeServe says labor is often at least 60% of a leach field job; Bob Vila puts it at about 60% of a tank and field replacement.
- Excavation. $2.50 to $15 per cubic yard (HomeServe, June 2025), or $1 to $5 per square foot (Bob Vila).
- Tree removal. $300 to $2,000 where trees stand in the way (HomeServe, June 2025).
- Restoring the yard. Sod at $1 to $2 per square foot (HomeServe, June 2025).
What moves the price
- Maintenance or permitted repair. A distribution box, header lines or a sewer line replaced in the same place need no VDH permit and no design. A tank or field does.
- The soil. Wetter ground can mean a mound, sand filter or treatment unit instead of conventional trenches. In HomeAdvisor's guide, a mound runs $10,000 to $20,000 against $3,000 to $8,000 for a conventional system.
- Space and a reserve area. Extension notes VDH requires a 50% reserve in silty and clayey soils. A lot with a reserve already set aside has an obvious place for new lines.
- Access. HomeServe says the low end of its range fits a small system on a lot clear of trees.
- Ongoing costs. An alternative system adds a yearly operator visit for most homes, and every system in the Bay Preservation Area needs a pump-out or inspection every five years.
Ways the bill can come down
Ask whether the problem can be solved as maintenance before a permit is pulled. Ask Suffolk Public Utilities' Engineering Division, (757) 514-7000, extension 3, whether a sewer main is close enough to price a connection. For a failing system serving one to four homes, ask the evaluator whether the state's waiver from certain treatment and pressure-dosing requirements applies. And if your household income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines, ask the Suffolk Health Department, (757) 514-4700, about VDH hardship help and the SWAP interest form. Septic system replacement has more on each.
Cost questions
Is the $225 permit fee the whole permitting cost?
No. The fee assumes the application includes a private soil evaluator's or engineer's documentation, and that work is billed separately by whoever does it.
Why do the published ranges disagree so much?
Each guide uses its own data and categories. HomeAdvisor says it surveys its customers; HomeServe's leach field range comes from HomeGuide; Bob Vila's average is reported from Angi. Their dates also run from 2023 to 2025.
What does a septic pump-out cost in Suffolk?
The City of Suffolk estimates $250 to $350 depending on tank size. The hauler's own price is what you'll pay.
Will a contractor give a written estimate before digging?
Ask for one. Pricing is set by the contractor, and a written quote that spells out the design, permit, materials, restoration and warranty is the number that counts.
